THRIVE Tomato Sauce - Flatbread Pizza


Looking for a quick dinner idea or after school snack to make for your family?  This flatbread pizza is quick & easy to make any time of the day.  Our new sauces let you make just the right amount needed for a recipe, eliminating wasted food.  I always hated opening a can of sauce for just a quick snack! You could make this on tortilla shells or on toast if you don't have any flatbread on hand. Enjoy....




Ingredients:
1 piece Archer Farms Naan Bread (From Target)
3 Tbs Prepared THRIVE Tomato Sauce*
1/4 Cup THRIVE Freeze Dried Sausage Crumbles*
2 Tbs THRIVE Freeze Dried Spinach*
1/4 Cup THRIVE Freeze Dried Mozzarella Cheese*
*Prepared or Rehydrated

Place naan bread on a baking sheet and lightly coat with oil.  Bake in oven on 350 for 3 minutes.  Remove and top with sauce, cheese, sausage and spinach and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until cheese is melted and bread is golden brown.

Shelf Reliance Salsa

I am really not a fan of wasting food.  That being said we always seem to have certain items in the fridge that are not eaten and eventually get thrown out.  It never fails to have half a jar of salsa that gets lost in the back of the fridge and goes bad.

A few years ago we started making our own salsa in batches that are just the right size.  Not only did the salsa taste better we got more for our money since we didn't waste any.  This past weekend we made nachos and I didn't have any fresh tomatoes on hand, thankfully I had most of the needed ingredients in my home store.

Sometimes I still can't get over how awesome THIVE freeze dried foods are. I would pick this salsa over store bought any day!

Ingredients:


Mix all ingredients in a large bowl and refrigerate for 30 minutes and enjoy!

Shelf Reliance Static V Sleeping Pad

Yesterday I received our Static V Sleeping Pad by Klymit.  The Stativ V is a lightweight inflatable pad that offers body matting technology at an entry level price.  The V chamber design which limits air movement and heat loss offers a unique ergonomic body map for peak performance and comfort.



The packaging is pretty small, about the size of a large water bottle.  I had been looking for something that would serve a dual purpose for my 72 hour kit and for backpacking trips. The size is small enough to be an easy addition to both packs and the cost is only $58.79!  I tried it out last night for a bit while we were hanging out watching tv.  The pad is large enough for a full sized adult. It fit great for my husband who is 6' tall and once you are laying down there are no pressure points that are hitting the ground even though the pad is only a few inches thick.

The manufacturer states that the pad can be blown up in about 10 breaths and it took me 12 which is not too bad.  The pad also features a simple to use push valve for easy inflation and deflation.  I was pleasantly surprised at how well I was able to repack the pad into the carry case.  Normally things like this are as aggravating as folding a map back in the correct position but this was a piece of cake.

The pack also comes with a patch kit which I hope to never need.  I guess the real test will be to take it on a backpacking trip this spring and see how well I like it after a few days.  I am excited to try it out for more than just a movie night!

Shelf Reliance Apple Bacon Mac And Cheese

This week I grabbed the new Every Day with Rachel Ray magazine.  I have never purchased this one before and was pleasantly surprised.  It had several recipes that I just had to try.  This mac and cheese recipe looked so different and I really wanted to try it out with my THRIVE freeze dried apples!

The dish turned out great.  I ended up making half of the recipe and it still made enough for 6-8 servings.  Every few bites you will be surprised with a little taste of apple that gives it such a unique twist.  The recipe called for white cheddar although I had my freeze dried Monterrey Jack and Mozzarella so I used those instead.  This is definitely a keeper!

Ingredients:
1 1/4 Cup THRIVE Elbow Noodles
1 Cup THRIVE Freeze Dried Mozzarella Cheese*
1/4 Cup THRIVE Freeze Monterrey Jack Cheese*
1 Tbs THRIVE Freeze Dried Green Onions
1 Cup THRIVE Freeze Dried Granny Smith Apples* (broken into 1/2" pieces)
1 1/2 Cup THRIVE Instant Milk*
6 Slices Bacon
2 Tbs Flour
2 Tbs Butter
Salt & Pepper
*rehydrated

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  In a large pan, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp.  Remove and lay on a paper towel lined plate.  Remove all but 1 tbs of grease, add apples and cook, stirring frequently until browned, set aside.

Cook pasta in a pot of boiling water for 5-6 minutes and drain.  In a medium sauce pan melt butter over medium heat then stir in flour.  Once blended add in milk and whisk until thickened 5-7 minutes.  Once thickened add cheese and whisk until smooth.  Season with salt and pepper.

Combine all ingredients into a 9" square baking dish and bake for 30 minutes.  You can top with extra cheese or bacon crumbles.

Shelf Reliance Potato and Spelt Cakes


Potato and Spelt Cakes

Prep time: 30 min
Makes 12 cakes
Potato & Spelt Cakes
IngredientsInstructions
¼c. THRIVE™ Chopped Onions
2tbsp. garlic, minced
¾c. THRIVE™ Mushroom Pieces (FD)
2tbsp. basil and parsley, equal parts
½c. water
1tbsp. butter
½c. THRIVE™ Spelt, cooked
¾c. parmesan cheese
2c. mashed potatoes (from 1 c.THRIVE™ Potato Beads)
2c. bread crumbs
Place the onions, garlic, mushrooms, herbs, water, and butter in a small skillet and bring to a simmer, stirring frequently. Reduce until mostly dry. Prepare potato beads as mashed potatoes, following directions on can. Add mushroom mixture, cooked spelt, and cheese and fold together. Form into small flat patties and coat with bread crumbs. Fry in a pan with olive oil and butter until browned.

Shelf Reliance Featured Product: Freeze Dried Sausage Crumbles


THRIVE freeze dried sausage crumbles have quickly become one of my favorite items that Shelf Reliance offers.  The taste is AMAZING and the ease of use and shelf life can't be beat.  The are packed with fully cooked seasoned sausage crumbles that are so good you can munch on them straight out of the can.  

I use my sausage crumbles in a variety of dishes:
  • Casseroles
  • Spaghetti Sauce
  • Omelettes 
  • Soups
  • Pizza Topping
  • Appetizers

When using sausage crumbles I don't always re-hydrate them.  It depends on what I am cooking and the taste I want to go for.  When making omelettes for example I will just toss them in with the eggs and they are good to go.  You can also toss them into a soup or casserole without rehydration, just add a little extra water.

2 1/2 cups of sausage crumbles equal about a pound of fresh cooked sausage.  There are approximately 4.8 lbs of sausage in a #10 can and just under 2 lbs in a pantry can.  Once a can is opened the shelf life is 1 year although would never last that long in our house.  Since it is pre cooked and oh so yummy I am always looking for recipes to incorporate it in.  My favorite perk?......... You don't have to worry about a greasy pan.  It sure makes a home cooked meal a breeze!
